Trio of paintings.....

Hi Everyone!  I hope you all had a great weekend.  I had a good weekend.  I worked on Saturday morning.  The weather was good.  I was able to get a lot accomplished.  I wanted to share with you one of the projects I started last week and finally finished this weekend.  I decided to make a set of three canvases out of wood.  I used a part of scrap luan and furring strips that were left over from another project to make my canvas.

I glued and nailed these together.
I sanded it and filled a few edges with wood filler.
It has a very nice grain and I thought about not painting it, but I just love this leaf green color that I had to use it.
I painted the base coat white and then a very pretty leaf green.
Then I dry brushed a coat of light green, a coat of antique white, then a bit of white.
Once the paint dried, I sketched a butterfly, a dandelion puff and a dragon fly, one on each canvas.  Then painted them white.
This is after about 3 coats of white.  I ended up putting on 5 coats of white paint to get the effect I wanted.
I wanted them to be all white, but that meant several coats on the outlining and a light coat of paint on the filled in areas.
I really like the way the dandelion puff turned out.  With a few seeds blowing in the wind.
The dragonfly is simple but goes well with the butterfly and dandelion.
Once I was happy with the white, I put on a coat of antique medium.  I always like the way it looks once it's antiqued.  I was going to sand it and I still might, but I always hate to sand paintings.  All that work just to be sanded away.
I'm going to enjoy looking at these for a while and then decide whether to sand them.
But my big question is....
....do I need to add some black or gray to give them a bit more definition.  What do you think?
Do I sand them?  Do I add some more definition?  What would you do?  Or do you like them the way they are?  I'd really be interested in what you think.  I hope you have a great week.  Thanks for stopping by.

  2. You are so talented! I think they look fantastic as they are. I definitely wouldn't sand them as you might lose some of the detail from the sketches. I think the dandelion is my favorite. Thanks so much for sharing these! You did such a great job!

  4. I think I like them white too. Black would give it a whole different look.

  6. I love everything about these! I too have done the "fake" canvas for my very first "original" family rules sign. :)
You sketched? how cool! The dandelion reminds me of a story I told the kids in pre-k. About how the dandelion being blown and scattered is like words we say. Once they are said and scattered we can't get them back. Makes ya think, eh?
have a great week holly! love your trio of paintings!

  7. These are so beautiful. I know you asked about whether you should add more and personally like the natural, simplicity of them. If you were to do anything, I would try rubbing a coordinating, darker color on the edge to break up the background color from the color of your wall that they are hanging on. They are absolutely beautiful!

  8. Your work is so lovely. I think the lightness and simplicity work very well. If you do anything, I agree with 'Balancing' above--just a little darker something on the edges, maybe.

  10. I love these! Did you use a brush or paint pen on these? I'd probably take a sander to the edges too, with a little dark paint or stain wash, but they are great just as they are too. Thanks for linking up!

  15. Love them - especially the dragonfly. You are pretty talented and they look fantastic. I think I would add some highlighting to define them. Don't know about sanding maybe will wash away too much. Great job! Thanks for sharing your creative inspiration over at Sunday's Best.
