A sewing base remade....

Hi Everyone!  Two years ago my Aunt Barb (aka the Free Stuff Fairy) brought me this antique sewing machine base, which you can read about here.  It's been sitting in one of the grain bins, waiting for me to decide what to do with it.  The top was not in good shape and I just didn't want to replace the top, I wanted to make it more functional.

Finally, after two years, I had a plan.....
....I removed the top...cleaned the dust off it....
...built a shelf and painted it black....
...using the holes that the old drawers had been attached by (only the reverse side)...
...I attached my shelf....and then I painted it.
I thought the black was tired and old (not in a good way) looking, so I decided to paint it.
I painted it with Krylon Paint and Primer Spray Paint in Ivory.
And I built a new top for it out of two 1x6"s and a 1x4" that I joined together with my biscuit joiner and stained with walnut stain.
I had a hard time deciding what color to paint it.  I almost (and I still might) paint it Lagoon (the same color I used on the inside of the antique drawer coffee table I made, but I thought the ivory would appeal to more buyers.
My thought for adding the shelf is that it would make it useful as a bed side table or an end table.  Would you have played it safe or gone with the bold color?  I still might...  Have a great weekend!  Thanks for stopping by.

  1. I love antique sewing machines, they remind me of my father's aunt. She had a black Singer that she gave to my aunt a few years ago.
I like the colors that you have chosen and I wouldn't change them.
Good idea to add that shelf.
    Have a nice day

    1. Thanks so much! I was on the fence about the color for a while...still am I think. And by adding the shelf, I wanted it to be practical too. Thanks again!

I was a bit scared to open this new blog and show my stuff because the web is full of beautiful things and very often I feel so "small" :-)

  2. Another project to make off the list :). Turned out great. I love that there is a contrast with the color of the top and the base. Great job.

  6. I know one thing for sure, my sewing machine should of come with a stand because I would of got more use out of it as a table than I do out of the sewing machine part. Yours turned out great.

  7. This is an amazing project. Love how it is functional as well as beautiful. I have one of these on my "Someday Dreams" list. I like the top as it is, or I might paint it the same colour as the base and add a graphic transfer to it. Tough decision.
    Well done!

  13. Such a great makeover, especially giving it some storage space. You know I would have played it safe too, but maybe a pop of colour inside the drawer would look nice ! ?

  17. Love this! I have a Singer base that was a rusty mess until I painted it and added a top. I'm thinking adding a shelf to mine would make an awesome vanity for prettying myself up.
