Mantel Clock Knock Off

Pottery Barn $129.00
Hi Everyone!  Happy Monday.  I woke up to a light snow that has continued on and off all morning.  It's only a light snow so it's not adding up to too much.  I wanted to share with you the project I was working on yesterday.  As I was salivating over the new Pottery Barn catalog (so many wonderful items I would love to have) I came across the Railroad Mantel Clock.  Have you seen it?
I love the look of this clock.  But I certainly don't love the price tag.  So I decided to make one.
And here's what I came up with.  What do you think?
I found this clock at the dollar store for $5.00 a while back, but it was too big for the wall that I wanted to hang it on.  So it's been sitting in my storage room for about a year.
I also had this 18" round left over from another project.  And it was the perfect size to go behind the clock.
I had to cut out the center of the round board so that the back of the clock had a place to be recessed into since it was not flush with the face.  And this way the battery and clock mechanism could easily be reached.
I sort of forgot to take some pictures as I was putting the base together.  I used two 1x12".  I cut a curve out of one of them so the clock  had a place to sit in.
I attached the two 1x12" with glue and nails.  Then I cut a 1x4" to frame the two 1x12" and give the base a more finished look.
Then I attached the round with glue, nails and a couple of screws.  I wanted to make it more stable so I used a 1x6" and attached it to the base.  Sorry no picture of it before I started painting.  I filled all the nail holes and gave it a good sanding.
I started by painting the whole thing black.  Then I added a coat of gold paint.  Then a mix of gold, black and brown.  Then another layer of watered down black.  I was trying to match the clock since I didn't want to paint the clock.  Once I was happy with the paint job, I put a coat of matte sealer on it and then glued the clock to the round using Gorilla Glue.
And this is how it turned out.
I'm so happy with the way it turned out.
Here's a close up of the paint next to the clock.  I think I did a pretty good job of matching it to the clock.
Sorry I don't have a full tutorial with all the pictures, but once I started putting it together, I forgot to pick up the camera until it was too late.

Now I need to make room for it on the shelf in my living room.  I don't have a mantel but I think it will look nice on the shelf.  The boards I used were all scrap pieces left over from bigger projects and I had the paint and the clock.  So it didn't cost me anything to make it.  Thanks for stopping by.
