Welcome sign

Hi Everyone!  I hope you are having a great Saturday.  I want to show you the new sign I made last night.  I was given this chippy door this past summer by my Aunt Barb.  I have looked at it over and over again wanting to paint on it, but not wanting to paint it.  It's really hard to tell in this picture but it has muted yellow, green, and tan paint showing through.  And I love that you see where the hinges and knob were.  I really like it the way it is, but knew it needed just the right something on it....so I kept putting it back.  Then last night it hit me...it needed to have birds on it....and words.....

...And this is what I did with it....
...I have used this saying before on a much larger scale...but thought it would look good on here....
....I started out by cleaning off the door and lightly sanding it...
...I painted on the welcome to our nest....
...then went a little crazy with the vine...
...and added the birds...
...I applied a sealer to it so the paint wouldn't chip off anymore...
....and added pegs to the bottom of the door....
....they are from the rail of a broken chair....
...and are perfect for hanging things on...
...the chair was black, so I painted them with ASCP in old Ochre...
....a layer of white craft paint...
...a layer of antique medium...
...and another layer of  ASCP in old Ochre....
...then lightly sanded to get the same look as the door...
....here's a close up of the main part of the sign....
....and a close up of those pegs...
....it's hard to see the different layers in this picture....
...it's not a very big cupboard door, but it's just the right size for a small entry way.....
...the only thing I have left to do to it is apply a coat of wax and add hangers on the back....
I'm very happy with the way it turned out.  I only wish I had a place to hang it.  Maybe if I move some things around I can find a place for it....  Have a great weekend!  The sun is out but there is a cold breeze so I won't spend too much time out in the shop today, but I'm itchin' to build something....Thanks for stopping by.

  3. The pegs that you added made it perfect for an entryway. I love the play on words too. I'm hosting a link party on wednesday at www.thenymelrosefamily.blogspot.com/2012/03/whimsy-wednesdays-1.html and I'd love it if you linked up. I'm following LF and GFC.

  4. I love painted signs on old doors! You did a fabulous job so hope you can find a place to hang it soon. Propping your sign against the wall on top of a piece of furniture gives you flexibility to move it around. :-)
